the stepford wives
i had a difficult day, so my partner sat down and watched a movie with me at the end of it all. the movie i picked was this one - i've wanted to watch it for a very long time but had never got around to it. i've known that it's an iconic and well-loved film, but i've never actually known why. after watching it, now i do. its influence on other films like jordan peele's 'get out' (which is also very good) is clear from the get-go. it was good, i liked it, and i definitely think it's earned its cult classic status.
the film is a visual treat - there's a lot of clear intentionality with the visuals in this movie, and it's great. say what you will about 1970s america, (and by all means, please do so) but those cars and outfits are so very stylish. while the movie was often slow and sometimes a little plodding, it was never boring, and think this is owed in large part to the visuals. the writing is, of course, also good. it's a thriller with a mystery that builds up - good writing is a neccessity for this kind of thing.
like i said earlier, the movie is a bit slow, but i think that mostly works in its favor. it does an excellent job of slowly, subtly building up a sense of unease, only to resolve them with some honestly nightmarish rug pulls near the end of the movie. the payoff for these is great and we started screaming at our screen at one particular scene. (rip bobby you would have loved lesbianism) it's a satisfying mystery, although i wish that the ending gave us just a little bit more information in regards to what exactly the stepford wives are, or what the significance of stealing eyes(?) is. (or if that's even what's happening.)
it was a good movie! i enjoyed it. i see why it's so iconic, and while it's not perfect, it's an enjoyable flick that's earned its status and reputation. while looking for this one on perfectly legal streaming services, i also came across a 2004 remake. i would like to watch that one, too, because i just find it plainly ironic that the stepford wives got a shiny new remake. if i'm lucky, it might even be good.
